Klaus Kroell was the most consistent racer of the season and he fully deserves the downhill crystal cup. The Austrian, during the season 2011/12, has never placed worse than eighth in the 11 runs completed.

Two wins, Chamonix and Kvitfjell, three podium finishes in Beaver Creek, Bormio, Kitzbuehel. On the Stelvio has lost his chances with an error a few hundred meters from the finish, but his was a great race anyway.

The downhill podium includes rising star Beat Feuz, who in Bormio did not finish the race, and third ended the season, and career, Didier Cuche, who this year won three times.

11 races for a total of 33,247 km. The fastest of the season was Kroell that took 20 minutes, 30 seconds and 48 cents to finish the season downhills. An average just over 97 km/h.

Here is the complete ranking of the top athletes who have finished all the races on the program:

Two races took place on the Piste Verte di Les Houches in Chamonix . The first was the one that had been cancelled in Val Gardena and was won by Klaus Kroell, who has finally caught the long pursued objective. The Austrian racer beat Bode Miller (by less than 0.01 seconds) and Didier Cuche (+0.04). Baumann and Guay, the two racers in fourth place are not much slower…just +0.08!

The second race took place on Saturday, when the Canadian team did great things in the cold weather: Jan Hudec placed first, Eric Guay third and Benjamin Thomsen fifth. The even numbers are for Romed Baumann and Beat Feuz.

The eighth race of the season and the very little gaps have stimulated the members of the editorial staff; they made a research through ski-db.com and asked themselves: Who would be the fastest (at the moment) in an ideal “stage race”, if we added up the times of each single race?

If we take this fact into consideration, the result is somehow surprising: the racers who finished all eight races covered 23 km and 805 m.

Here is the top 20. The list takes only the racers who completed all the eight races into consideration.

Didier Cuche hasn’t been distracted by his announced retirement from racing at the end of the season and after he enjoyed great success at Lake Louise and Kitzbuehel, he won a first place in Garmisch too. Officials were forced to move the starting gate of the Super-G because of very low clouds and the race was halved. This is the 20th victory in the career for the Swiss champion, who 100% understood the track and took revenge against Erik Guay, the one who placed first before him in the DH World Cup last year. This time the Canadian is second at 0.27 seconds, while Hannes Reichelt is third at 0.30 seconds.

The Italian team shows good signs of recovery. For the second time this season and for what DH is concerned, three racers are in the Top 15. Christof Innerhofer has found the same feeling with the snow he had early in the season. The customs officer from Gais did an excellent performance in the town where last year he found glory, fame and three World Championship medals and only a bad mistake in the lower part of the track prevented him from being on the podium. He is fourth, just 0.09 seconds from the podium. Dominik Paris did well too, he finished sixth place but he had been very near the podium until the latest gates. Peter Fill finished his race in an encouraging thirteenth place, while Werner Heel, Siegmar Klotz, Matteo Marsaglia and Mattia Casse got no points at all.

The overall standings remain unchanged at the top. Ivica Kostelic (905 points) and Marcel Hirscher (825 points) haven’t opened up a lead yet; Beat Feuz is third (and only twenty-third on this occasion) with 673 points.

Ordine d’arrivo DH maschile Garmisch (Ger):

We had in mind to tell an adventurous story from Tyrol last weekend but, unfortunately, water, snow and fog ruined the most classic race and the Streif slope in Kitzbühel looked just like a pale, misty and hasty postcard.

The track? Just a little more than two kilometers. The race? Just a little more than one minute. A few of the most interesting spots of the stunning Austrian course were cancelled. The result was a race for sprinters and the first place on the podium, oh yes, the most important place on the podium was for a real man, a real champion: Didier Cuche!

Didier Cuche was already the King of the Streif and a few days ago, in Kitzbühel, he revealed that this will be the last season for him. Two days later he sealed his career, overcoming Franz Klammer, the “Kaiser”, for what the number of successes (5 vs 4) on the Streif is concerned. If we add the Super G he won two seasons ago, the six victories of the Swiss champion on the Hahnenkamm are a very prestigious result.

The victory of Didier Cuche on this “mutilated” track has saved the seriousness of the race. It was one of the shortest World Cup races in history, just 73 seconds. The 2012 edition was just a little longer than the shortest race ever; it was 2003, the race lasted 69 seconds and the Streif was dominated by the great chapion Daron Rahlves, the one who invented the motto “Pure Adrenaline”, the same motto that has been officially used in Bormio this year…
